Does anyone out there tow their RV and boat? I have a 17'8" boat and would like to eventually be able to upgrade my "lakeside retreat residence". Do most people have a small 5th wheel or something like a pop-up or just a normal trailer? I'm not looking to traverse the Rockies, just putz around to state parks in the area.

I have see it on my travels out west and at best it looks scary .

Even some of the legal doubble tankers i have seen in Wyoming were a SWAYING accident waiting to happen.

And i would think how legal it is changes a lot from state to state

tommays

Here in the midwest we see lots of travel trailers and fifth-wheels tandem-towing a fair size boat. Check the laws in your state before you spend big bucks only to find out your travels may be restricted. If you have a pop-up (tent trailer), make darned sure you check with the manufacturer about tandem towing. Remember that the tongue weight on the back of the camper reduces that on the tow vehicle which can create some real serious handling problems. Ever heard the term "tail is wagging the dog"? Also make sure the camper frame is capable of towing the extra weight since it appears the nearly 18 footer will be in the 2500 - 2700# range. If the boat and trailer weigh more than the camper you have a potential handling problem.

I pull my ford ranger behind my motor home on tow dolly, with my aluminum bass boat behind the ranger. I drive slowly, dont travel long distances with this combination. Its a little harry. My license allows double, tripple towing in texas. But I still dont like it. If traveling any distance (50 mi or more)I put the boat behind the motor home and let the wife drive the ranger.

My neighbor has a Ford F-250 longbed ext. cab and diesel that pulls a 5th. wheel with his pontoon behind him.
Don't know how far he goes, but he will be gone 2 weeks or so before I see him coming back in.

I say neighbor, he is like 5 mile from me, but he always comes and goes out the same way all the time.
