Yesterday there was a combined birthday party at my house for the nieces and nephews. One of the attendees came out to visit while I was re-wiring my boat. He couldn't stop telling me about all the fishing he'd done and all the boats he'd owned. He looked at my rod rack and said humm I'd never pay that much for a fishing rod. He then proceed to relish in his prowess as a fly fisherman and I told him "well then, you'd probalby really like that 9-6 Z-Axis Sage on the wall over there". He said, "Yeah, I have one". Normally, at this point I would have gotten competitive in the conversaton but it dawned on me how much I didn't care for his attitude and made me wonder if I also sounded like that. I hadn't said much up to that point so I know I didn't sound like that to him but maybe, in other conversations, I had and that disturbed me.

I'm going to do my best from now on to make sure I don't sound like that guy and if I have in the past, I appologize, I really didn't realize it was taking so much away from the subject of the original conversation.

No one here needs to think that just because I bought something expensive it's what you need to do to be a happy fishierman. That's not even close to what fishing is all about.

I've been fishing for as long as I can remember, my dad was and avid fisherman and I was his first born son. You can bet he dragged me out there in diapers. I'm now 59 years old and yesterday was the first day I ever fished. If you can understand that, then that's what fishing is all about in my head. It may not be the way you think about it and that's perfectly fine with me.

Happy fishing.

And it sounds like your dad also taught you to buy quality gear and take care of it.;)

Costalrichard, that's true. He kind of told me, in his own way, that when someone passes fishing gear down to you and it's quality stuff it's as good as saying "You're in the club". I think I can say that this is what I intend to happen to my stuff.

Watch out for motor mouths, sometimes called know-it-alls. They are often loaded with myths and very bad advice.

JB, a wise man once said something on this ordrer: "It's sometimes better to let people think you don't know anything than it is to open your mouth and prove it".

Proverbs 17:28 is an early source of the line: "Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding."

Apparently there are lots of versions to this saying: "It's sometimes best to be silent and thought the fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." I guess it depends on which way you want to slant it:D

Pretty amazing, I cant think of the last time I heard something said so many different ways and still end up with exactly the same meaning.

You will be amazed at what you can learn by listening to others.

As a Salesman, I am a firm believer in the old adage 2 ears ? 1 mouth, use them in that proportion. The skill is sorting fantasy from reality and how you address it during the conversation.

Re: Fishing, what

I really enjoy talking and reading about fishing. I get a big kick out of reading how some of the guys on here have caught fish. I have a brother who is quite a fisherman and a neighbor who has fished a small river near here, with his buddies for years. I like talking fishing with them, although they fish in different ways than my wife and I do. Ooops! I see this is supposed to be about people who talk too much.

I have a similar saying. My mother is a difficult person, so my saying is that the good Lord gave me two ears so that when she gets out of line, I can let it go in one ear and out the other.

It's not about people that talk to much, it's about people with inferiority complexes who constantly attempt to prove themselves to others by bragging about their possesions and skills. I met the nicest guy at West Marine today. I stopped on my way back from the lake to pickup up a couple of things. He saw my rig and asked if I minded if he had a look at it. I told him to go ahead and that I'd be right out to answer any questions he might have.

We ended up talking for almost an hour and the conversation was, well, just nice. We swapped stories and thoughts about what the fishing might be like at different places around the area. At the end we swapped business cards and agreed to get together and go fishing some time. I'm not sure if we ever will but I'm pretty sure we would if either of us ever called. Now that's the way I figure it's supposed to be. I know the guy JLawsen is talking about, the guys a bozo.
