Taking out XL extension on NS8B

I just picked up a 1992 NS8B with the XL extension . I would like to take this out , but don't want to break into it unless I know I have everything I need to go back together . What I need to know is do I need a new drive shaft or is there a short shaft in the XL unit that I need to just remove. Any advice on this procedure would be greatly appreciated.

You would need a new drive shaft, water tube and shift rod.
