My fuse blowing issue came back today and I think it might be in the remote control key switch. For some reason the motor flooded this morning and it took a lot of cranking and a new set of plugs to get it going. Not long after it started blowing the 20 amp motor fuse each time the key was turned on. After 4 fuses I came in on the kicker motor. 1992 40 Merc classic 2 stroke, had a bare wire short a month or so back on the trim/ tilt system. Fixed that and all has been perfect.....until today. Need to take apart the remote control to check for burnt wires, only see those 3 screws holding it to the side, any tricks or things to watch out for when taking one of these apart ?? Thanks in advance !!

I did a quick google search to find that it's actually a "commander 2000" and there's all kinds of videos and information on them. There's a lot going on in there, so you might want to take some pictures before you tear in to it too much. Hope you get it figured out. I'm guessing the ignition switch is in that box?

I have three of those controls. I have a buddy who is really good at that kind of disassembly/reassembly stuff... and it defeated him! That was the only time that I've ever seen him not be able to get something apart and back together. I ended up having to buy a used replacement online. Fortunately, they're pretty cheap.

As brodmann said... there's a lot going on in there.

Best of luck! :)

My control is the Commander, for a 1985 Mercury 50HP 2-stroke, as shown below. I actually got a manual for it online from ebay. The part # is 90-814705R03.

Thanks folks, my factory service manual has the diagrams, just wondering if there were any tricks, tips, things to be aware of when taking one apart. From all my research, beginning to think it is the key / choke switch that is the problem. Looks like the whole darn thing has to come apart just to look at the switch. As a toolmaker, electrical stuff sucks !!

well, hopefully, mabey I won't have to take the controller apart....decided to go back into the motor wiring and take a deeper dive first. I did see the key switch was loose and tightened that up so no more wobbling about, not sure how I didn't notice that thru all my frustrations yesterday !! Anyway got inside the wiring panel and started looking for micro signs of anything strange going....did see a small bunch of wires with many wraps of tape to prevent chaffing as they were right beside some screw heads. As I pulled, yanked and searched with my super bright led flashlight, I noticed a small mark like a burn mark on the backside right where a screw head rubs. Using a small pick it appeared to be a hole where an arc had taken place about the diameter of a mosquito head, in other words very tiney ! No real discoloration to the screw head but there was on the wire wrap if you could see that small. Used some heavy duty gorilla tape and made a few more wraps in that area and tried to maneuver the wires a little so they wouldn't rub on that screw, which was a ground. Everything appears to be working well now, no more blown fuses as of late this morning. Gonna make a few tries on the water and see if it is cured, keeping my fingers crossed!!
