Tail Light mounting options?

I just picked up a 15' aluminum boat on a light duty C channel trailer.
It needs new tail lights and wiring. The original lights are 4x4" bell jar type lights, but they lower edge is ground off.
They hit the ground when the trailer tilts.
I intend to use modern 3x8" LED submersible lights and a new wiring kit.
The problem is that there's no real place to mount them where they won't get crushed or stepped on.
Mounting them on the sides of the frame will mean they will stick out past the fenders too far and they won't survive long like that.
The entire rear of the frame is drilled for bunk adjustments, but putting them there will certainly mean they will hit the ground when the trailer tilts.

I don't want or need pole type guide ons, so putting them up high isn't an option.
Does anyone make a corner bracket that would set them just above the frame level attached to the rear corner on each side?
If not I'm thinking of taking a piece of 3x4" galvanized angle iron and making up a set of corner mounts which will both raise and shield the new lights but it just seems like someone would have already marketed something like this?

Sorry but I've not seen anything prefabed like this. Do you have any trailer sales shops close by that you could check with? Don't think you're going to find a lot of options.

Why not just mount the lights to the backs of the fenders?

I cant really see your trailer from here, but something made from 1.5x1.5 perforated angle iron from Lowes or HomeDepot should do the job.

I always mount my tail lights in or under a 10" length of 3x4" angle iron, both to protect the top and to keep the bottom of the light from getting scuffed on the ramp when I tilt the trailer.

It also keeps them from getting stepped on when climbing in and out of the boat.

Most small boat trailers don't have fenders suited for mounting trailer lights, if the OP's trailer has fenders like mine, their either plastic or do not drop low enough to mount the light in a way it faces straight rearward.
Mounting a light too low on a fender will result in it getting beat up by tire splash and debris. Especially if you running around the Jersey shore where many areas are paved with crushed stone or clam shells.

Re: Tail Light mounting options?

I figured I'd come back here and give an update.
This is what I came up with:
I used 3x4" galvanized 1/4" angle iron cut to 9" long bolted through on the rear and with an angle bracket of the same material on the side. I can stand on them and nothing moves, and their mounted just up enough so that the bottom edge of the bracket hits before the taillight when tilted.

Well done. Try buying that in a store.

Looks good. Looks just like the factory setup on a Karavan trailer.

Hmmm... the bottom edge sometimes rubs...and you have the wiring for the tail lights running under the bottom edge that sometimes rubs...why would I run the wires some other route...
..or....is that bolt blocking the view of a hole in the bracket for the wiring???

Re: Tail Light mounting options?

The wiring goes through a drilled hole in the bracket near the bottom. The taillights can only touch on a soft ramp, the bottom ends of the bunk brackets hit the ground first on a level concrete ramp. The old taillights were just bolted the rear cross member and the old bunks were just lag bolted from underneath through the frame. I made them adjustable so I can fit this to any boat.
The way it was before it ground off the bottom of the old tail lights but that was before I owned it. I may never find the need to tilt this trailer, but its nice to have the option.
Something else I thought about is a chain to limit how far the trailer can tilt. Either a chain or a short length of stainless cable. Right now it there's no limit at all.

Did not realize you have a tilt trailer..thought whole trailer was getting tilted...
When I got my boat & trailer..the trailer came with a chain limiting the amount of tilt
when using the tilt feature...:D

Your light setup looks nice:D

I like the idea of the chain to limit the tilt.
I've got two tilt trailers, neither one has any means to keep it from tilting too far.
I'll probably add a chain but I'll leave it adjustable until I've launched a loaded a few times.
The ramps here vary and on a few ramps the trailer gets tilted pretty far to get the boat started on the first roller.
