'97 88 special. newer rectifier, tach works great but doesnt seem to be charging like it did a couple of weeks ago. Unregulated system used to charge to 16+ volts and I would turn on accessories to bring it down while running. Sunday while out I noticed max volts I could get was 12.8 while running. thought it was the gauge but checked digital voltage input on Lowrance gps and it was 12.4-12.5 at idle and max 12.8 while running 4800 rpm's. Did notice that gauge would bounce up and down like a loose connection while running in heavy chop. Checked all connections and all good. I couldn't duplicate the loose connection by wiggling any wires(motor running). I'll check output directly from terminals at rectifier later but any thoughts?

Check battery terminals to see if they get hot when running.
Put a guage across the battery cable from batt to engine to see if theres any v drop along the cable, load test the battery at autozone for free.

Thought about the battery going bad due to maybe over charging earlier due to non regulated system. But, why would that affect the actual output from the motor while running? Would a bad battery make it show only 12.8 volts while running?

Ok, wouldnt a bad rectifier cause the tach to stop working? Also wouldn't a bad stator cause the engine to not run? Tach works great and engine runs better then ever.

Re: Tack functions fine but not charging?

Stator typically has two independent functions: Battery charging (alternator coils), ignition voltage (charge coils). So a motor can run with a bad stator.

You need to do some logical troubleshooting. See CDI Electronics website for detail.

i thought about that and I will print out the CDI guide and start checking. I need to get a DVA adapter for my voltmeter. Anyone know any places that carry them besides ordering online?
