I've got a '76 V6 Evinrude. I was out on the lake the other day when the tach just quit. Engine was running fine so I didn't go in for another hour. Finally came and shut the engine down. About thirty minutes later I tried to start the engine and nada. The starter spun but not fast enough to engage the gear. Dead battery! Replaced battery and engine cranked right up. Tach worked for maybe three minutes and quit. Thought at first maybe stator but engine ran with dead battery. Anybody got a clue???<br />Hooty

Re: Tachometer

Stator has 2 circuits one for charging, one for ignition. Locate rectifier, round thing with 2 yellow wires, 1 red wire. Locate the 2 yellow and 1 gray wire connected at termial board. From this termial remove the yellow wire going to the rectifier and tape termial. Start and run engine if tach works rectifier is bad. Tach not working check stator.
