Tachometer Wiring Troubles

I have a 1985 Evinrude 115 that I am trying to hook up a new tach on. The old one never worked as long as I have had it. I checked the plug connections coming out of the control box and didnt have a signal on either pole. I hooked up the IGN pole to another 12v power source and ran a jumper wire to the "grey wire" on the engine wiring block and hooked it up to the SND pole on the new tach. Still nothing. I have tried all settings on the back of the new tach. I am at a total loss here. Anybody have any suggestions?

It's pretty simple. Grey is the sense lead, black is grd and purple is switched 12 vdc.

I have no power at the two wire harness that comes out of the control box so I attempted to bypass it and go directly to the source. I hooked a jumper up to the #3 grey wire spot on the engine wiring block. I just cant seem to get anything to work.

The only power is on the purple and it's only for internal illumination power. All the tach needs to work is the grey and black. You won't get a voltage on the grey (it's pulses, and then only when motor is running). It your meter can read pulses or frequency, you may read something.

I already hooked it up to the grey wire coming out of the control box and got nothing. I then hooked it up to the grey wire on the engine wiring block and still got nothing.

... and you connected a ground also? Also, it's an outboard tach, not an auto one?

Yes, also a ground

Time to check the regulator/rectifier. BTW, does the motor charge the battery?
