Tachometer question

I'm relatively new to powerboating and have a 1995 Yamaha 40hp outboard. I'm worried about running it at the right rpm but don't have a pile of money to buy a Yamaha tachometer. Can other tachs be used? There is a Lund available on Ebay for a reasonable price but I don't want to buy something I can't use. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

there are zillions of teleflex tachs on ebay for cheap......
