If this is an electric start enginehe very first thing to check will be the power output to the battery. I know that doesn't make a lot of sense but it will be the clearest indicatior. Just stick a voltmeter on the engine before you start it and see what it reads (should in the the low 12's) and then start the engine and bring it up to a medium RPM, above 2,000, and then stick the volt meter on it. It should read higher, possibly between 13~14.2 volts or so. If it does not read that sort of voltage its probably your stator that is killing the tach.<br /><br />However, if the problem is intermitent check all connections first.<br /><br />Thom
