tachometer problem

I have a 1998 Carolina skiff Seachaser with a carbureted 150hp Mariner motor.My problem is at idle my tach shows 3000rpm.Where do I begin to fix this problem?Ive checked connectios on the tach side and they seem tight.I dont know where the wires connect on the engine side though.The tach is a teleflex brand and is 2 years old.

yo loggerhead<br /><br />>Check with a voltmeter to see if you have a good pos. supply and ground to the tach.<br /><br />>Try repositioning the pole selector switch back and forth a few times to reseat a possible bad connection.<br /><br />Does the tach read right at higher speeds?<br />What is the battery voltage when it reads high?

I have same problem and tach sometimes indicates twice the real rpm's. I restart the engine and problem is solved. WHY???
