Moved a number a dials/gauges and now all work except the tachometer. Thought I had kept track of all wires but obviuosly messed something up. Can you tell me what colored wires should be connected to this gauge. Thanks

Mine has 4 terminals, the tach sending or pulse wire is gray, then it has the black grounds, Blue lighting wires, and the purple wires that come from the ign. Dont have it right in front of me, but those are the colors you probably have also, I have a 94 Evinrude 112 spl.

Re: Tachometer problem 1994 Evinrude 150 hp V6

Thanks Tbull. Have checked it out. All wire colours as you suggested.

Grey = sending or pulse
Black = ground
Purple = ignition

Blue = ? lighting but these two blue wires are short wires attached to the grey Sending connector and one goes to the speedo and the other to the trim gauge.

There is another short black wire which goes between the tachometer and the fuel gauge

Similarly two short purple sections of wire both from the ignition connector, one to the fuel gauge and one to the trim gauge

Does this make any sense??

No. The fuel gauge runs to a variable resistor inside the gas tank so it is a really good idea to be sure that you have it wired according to the manufacturers specific instructions and OMC/BRP is very unlikely to be the manufacturer.

The + wiring for gauge lights is universally blue and can be chained from gauge to gauge.

The ground G wire on the tach is black and should be wired to the small M post on the ignition switch. The positive + tach wire is purple and should be wired to the A accessory post on the ignition switch.

"Blue = ? lighting but these two blue wires are short wires attached to the grey Sending connector and one goes to the speedo and the other to the trim gauge".

The grey wire is connected to the rectifier at your engine. If voltage rides the grey wire as it will if you turn the gauge lights on, you will destroy your rectifier, or worse. The gray wire should have nothing connected to it at the helm but the tach S post.

Thanks Ezeke. So I will remove the two blue wires and leave only the gray one from the rectifier to be attached to the S post on the Tach.

Tbull mentioned the Tach gauge will have 4 terminals, which it does. At this point one is unused - so is this where the blue wires should go? They just seem to be in series between the gauges.

I'm a bit of a novice as you can tell so thanks heaps for the help.

There are several brands of tachometers with different symbols. A picture of the terminals or at least a description would help.
