I have just hooked up a honda tachometer to my bf40 and it does not work properly. It runs higher than the rpm's and at full throttle it runs in the red. I have read about a setting to correct this but I cannot find the jumpers. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

i'm not familiar with the honda set-up. but I noticed on my tach theres a selection switch on the backside of the tach. I'd imagin you've checked, just thought I'd throw that in there. good luck

If the bf40 is newer than 2005, you set the indicator on the back of the tach to 3P (you have a 6 pole alternator). For all other years, set it to 2P ( you have a 4 pole alternator).

Re: tachometer on a honda bf40

For the 1999 BF50, did the tach ever give the correct readings? If the tach just started giving you a problem, may times it is related to a poor ground somewhere. Try cleaning the terminal wires on the back of the tach to start. A tach runs off your alternator which and associated rectifier and voltage regulator. There could be a problem there. Or you could have a tach that has gone bad and needs to be replaced. Not really familiar with a tach that does not have a selector dial on the back which allows you to change the alternator pole setting.

No the Tach is brand new on the Honda there is a wiring set up that you just plug into, could it be the wrong tach but I heard that they are all the same, how would it know how may cylinders etc.

Marine tachs as well as all gauges can be notoriouly inaccurate. There may well be a calibration dial on the back of that tach but these triples can throw some curves at you.The only way to know where you really are is to put it on the water with a good shop tach.
