Tachometer issue

Not sure if my tach is bad... Yesterday the WOT RPM was 4400 and today it is 5000. Checked the wires etc... no change in the boat just a change in the WOT high end. Any suggestions ?

Tach's are not that accurate, need to get a hand held to be sure

Try tapping on the talk with you knuckle. Mine will sometimes go up to mid 5k or stick at 3k even with engine off. I tap it and it goes back to normal.

Ayuh,..... Mine took a severe beatin' the other day, before I believed it to be Anywhere near true,......

+1 on tapping the tach.

I'm assuming you took the wot rpm readings with the same load, same prop (or same condition prop), relatively same conditions (wind/current/etc.), anything that would affect your drag?

Ok. rapped on it.. and tightened the nuts on the back... now its reading 4000.. same top end speed.. time to get a new one.

Sometimes you can turn the dial on the back that is for 4-6-8 cyl, give it a crank back and forth to get rid of possible corrosion on the contact and I've found mine to settle down.
