Tachometer Force 120???

OK, I have identified the purple wire that goes to the tachometer and I am ready to purchase and install one on my 1990 force120, though it is not currently running. That is another thread that a member is helping me on.

My question is, can I use any brand of tach or does it need to be specific to my motor and set up?

Yes, you have to get a tach that is compatible with your ignition system. If you have the Prestolite ignition system (Blue coils & CD modules), you need a tach for a 20 Pole stator. Later model ignition systems require a tach compatible with a 12 pole stator.

That purple wire might not be the correct lead.It might be a grey wire to the tach.Purple is a power lead.(I think)J

OK, the engine block diagram only identifies the purple lead, should there then be more than one lead to the tach? I do have some gray leads at the block, I will look them over tonight. Currently the boat does not have a tach and the purple lead is not attached to anything under the dash.

Purple or grey will be for the tacho sync
Orange or Tan will be for the overheat buzzer

I got a faria chesapeake ss black. It gives you the option of setting 4 6 8 10 and 12 pole stators via switch on the back. My 120 force is a 12 pole.

how do I tell if it is a 12 or a 20 pole?

Usually instructions that come with the tach, or there is a selector switch on the back of the tach that indicates the number of poles. 20 pole tachs are harder to find than the 12 pole tachs.
