Bought a used pontoon with a Nissan 9.8 on it. The helm has a Faria Tach and Volt meter in it, however they are not functioning. Upon opening up the helm I discovered that there is a square 4 pin connector coming from the tach and volt meter combined with no square connection coming from the motor or remote. The wiring diagram shows that a white and yellow wire are used for the tach. Neither of which come from the remote or motor, in fact they are no where to be found.

I seen in the owners manual photo that there are 2 wire leads coming from the remote, however in my case there is only 1 on the right side above the control cables, with a plug over the left opening of the remote.

Is it possible that the installer did not install the necessary cable to connect to the tach? And, where to you get a connection for the volt meter or does this pick up off the signal to the tach?

Any idea where to get the cable to connect it if needed?

Chances are they never could get the tach to work, since those tachs do not work...See your local Nissan or Tohastu dealer for a factory tach or you can get one on the internet at www.internetoutboards.com

Re: Tachometer for Nissan 9.8

You did not mention your model, but I'll go on the assumption that you have a 4-stroke, possibly an NS9.8A3, electric start with remote.

The appropriate tachometers are 3AC726400M TACHOMETER - 4STR - BLACK (FTC8138) $74.25 or 3AD726400M TACHOMETER - 4STR - WHITE (FTC8137) $74.25. Selecting the appropriate harness/cable will depend on the distance to the instrument, whether you have an RC box, and, if so, which model of box. If your motor does not have a charging system (all electric start motors will), then these tachometers will not operate -- they get their signal from the alternator.

The proper voltmeters are 3GF725290M VOLTMETER - BLACK (FVP7157) $36.07 or 3GL725290M VOLTMETER - WHITE (FVP7156) $36.07, although any voltmeter will work OK. If you are equipped with key-start remote, the VM should be setup so that it is energized only when the key is "ON", otherwise, it should be setup to shut off with the master battery switch, so that it does not run the battery down when not charging.

There is a possibility that your existing tach might work. You would need to determine which model of Faria tach you have, and whether it is an ignition-operated tach, or an alternator tach. You need an alternator tach. Get the information regarding the pin-out of the connector from Faria.

Full information on the tach and volt meter wiring is in the Factory service manual (available from any dealer, including me), and some info is in the RC manual for your model of RC box.

You deleted my post! Why am I not surprised?

Because you posted in an 8 year old thread and it was deleted because it was basically nonsense. Also it was deleted to avoid closing the thread. Since our rules are for everybody but you, why am i not surprised? You left us with no choice.

CLOSED!
