Tachometer for a 40 hp mariner

Hi
I have a 1982 40hp mariner built by yamaha, serial no mariner 40e 6e9l 405360 I want to purchase a tachometer for this motor would any marine tacho do or does it need a special tachometer, I remember reading a post something along those lines cannot find the post now.

Nothing special. Buy it right here on iBoats. Outboard tachs are pretty generic unless you own a Force.

A couple of questions if I may, what does pulse mean, how many pulses would my 2cyl have and also what is 12 pole and does this apply to my engine.
My ignition harness has 3 wires that are plugged ready for use it has yamaha on the plastic cover I presume these connect to the tachometer, I have a manual but it's not very clear on what wire connects to what, any help would be greatly appreaciated.
