Tachometer checkout question...

I have stopped in here a few times of late and got some good answers sometimes and I thank those who took the time. I have a 1978 115HP Evinrude 4 cylinder. Great compression. Posted about a missing starter bolt letting exhaust out, got no answer but the new bolt seems to have fixed it.

Went to ski. Figured out in a real hurry that maybe I had the wrong prop and maybe my tachometer I assumed was just way off might be right on. Read 3800 RPMs and seems to have good speed on top end. I know I wanted somewhere around 5300 but until this I wasn't worried. What kind of tests should I use and what kind of tachometer test or tester do you guys recommend? I'm assuming the gray wire and ground. We put an automotive one on it last night using the induction to go around the spark plug wire and got about twice the RPMs as my tach was reading. I had the feeling that maybe the automotive one was givng me a raw hint since it was reading about twice what mine was reading.

Any advice?

Thanks.. Guvner..

About the tach - unless that auto tach's off an old 2-stroke SAAB, it will count 1 plug firing for every 2 revolutions. 2-stroke engines fire every revolution, so an inductive pick-up auto tach will count 2 revolutions for each firing, or twice what it should when on a 2-stroke. Clear as mud?

Re: Tachometer checkout question...

It sounds like 4000 RPM's on it would equal the 2000 RPM's I saw on my tach... Local marine dealer told me that you really couldn't check the tach with a hose. Wasn't sure if I made it clear over the phone but he said it be best if I came by and borrowed a shop tach and check it under load. That sounded pretty fair so I guess that's what I'm doing. He might have been talking about getting the right prop on it so maybe he thought I wasn't concerned with the accuracy of the tach.

What
