I just got a telflex black sterling. the setting knob on the back says to "Set to 1/2 number Of Alternator poles" I've looked up and down the Yamaha service manual and can't find anything about alternator poles or if my yammie even has an alternator. In the paper work it mentions "stator/alternator" just like that but else where in it and now where the above settings are at. It doesn't say anything about it NOT working on this motor. these are the listed motors in the paper work
Yamaha
9.9, 15 hp
25-70 hp
90-250 hp
F/T9.9, F 15, F20 hp
F/T25 - F225 hp

That is exactly how it reads on the paperwork.
Thanks

Re: Tach Settings for yamaha 55

There should be about 3 or 4 different settings on the back of tachometer....maybe just try it in each setting until the tachometer seems normal with the motor running. You'll know if it's right or not. Good Luck!:)

Re: Tach Settings for yamaha 55

sorry yamatech and the rest of you. guys thought I posted it. Its a 1995 C55TLRT 2 stroke, 2 cylinder. thanks for the help so far.

then again it does say "settings for yamaha 55" in the title and I'm pretty sure there were only a few 55 hp Yamahas out there and as the local yamaha dealers horrible customer service people say "all yamaha 55's are all the same" not trying to be a smart @$$, just sayin.

and once again, thanks for the help yall. Loads of great info here

there was a 2 cylinder and a 3, and they are different if you looked at the link I posted, at least that is what i got out of the chart. But maybe there was not a C55 in the C30- C70 3 cyl

Its been my understanding after much reading about these motor and all the problems that I seem to have contracted that it was only made in the 2 cyl model. Then again I may be wrong, I've been known to be that before, as I'm definitely no expert in the outboard world. And yes I was able to finally get the link to open (my computer problems, nothing wrong with the link) thanks for the help yall. Now if I could only figure out what the milkshake looking stuff in my other post is then I'd be sitting pretty. Thanks again yall.

4 pole tach setting.
I take it from that and the link that 99yam posted that I have 4 poles.
so I should set it to 2P as that is "1/2 of poles" as the very vague directions indicate, correct?
my choices on the back of the Tach are : 2P/4C, 3P/6C, 4P/8C, 5P, 6P,

Poles and pulses confuse me also, seems like there was one twice as much as the other
is there a setting for 2 pulse, if so try it
If not try the 4 or 8

confused is a understatement. I would be happy to settle for confused, and not so mind-boggled I'm having dreams about milkshake foam coming out of my tach with so many pulses an ER doctor would have a heart attack.

2P/4C maybe a 2 pole or a 2 pulse/ 4 cylinder etc
