I've got a 1971 60HP Johnson outboard. I added a
tach which seems to work fine at everything but idle speeds. I had thought my idle speed was way high, but after much tinkering I have noticed that the tach always reads about 1200rpm even when I bring the idle down so low that the engine stalls. Also reads the same in nuetral as it does in gear, even with I can hear a noticable decrease in engine speed.

The Tach is set for a 3 Cyl, all wiring is new. I even ran a new wire from the tach directly to the electrical connection block on the engine. No splices or connections in the wire. Why does my tack not read below 1000-1200 RPM's? Thanks for any help.

Re: Tach Reads High at Idle

The tach could be bad it is on a 31 year old motor. You should post this in the proper forum under Outboard Engines and troubles.

Bob
