tach problem - still!!!!!

I have been having a problem for awhile now with my tach. I have a 305 gm engine with points ignition. The engine runs fine, everything works but the tach. I have run a new wire from the coil to the tach. If I hook it up to the side that goes to the distributor it pegs the needle when I turn on the ignition. If i hook it up to the otherside of the coil I get no reading on the tach at all.

I also purchased a new tach thinking this was my problem. Same results. I need you guys to throw out some ideas what I can look for or change to solve this problem.
