I recently swapped out my 50 4-stroke for a 40 2-stroke and I'm wondering if I have to change the pole settings on my Yamaha tach. There's a lot of discussion surrounding the subject out on the web but can't seem to find my exact situation. My User's manual is next to worthless on the subject. Current setting from previously motor is 6p. Been advised to switch to 12p but worry I might outrun the tach and damage it.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Tach Pole Settings 2 vs 4 stroke engine

the manual for tach will give the switch settings
Might look for info on that as we have no idea what tach you have

I think the 4 strokes were 12P and the 2 stroke were 6P on Yamaha's but not sure what motors you have either
