According to the seloc manual the tach wire is in the control box not connected so should i fish it out or is there a better solution, also the tach is used so should i calibrate it withh a timing light ,I'd have to borrow one with rpm reading, mine doesn't have it. I need to know to link and sink the motor on monday and is there any clearer instruction anyone could e-mail me.....
also on the back of the tach are terminals "12+...1...-" and lighting is seperate all together...

thanks for all the great advice, I appreciate ya'lls being --'been there and done that' years of experiences....:)

The grey wire is the tach lead. You may be able to remove some of the black rubber sheathing on the wire loom by the control box and expose that wire. You can connect there. Usually, you do not need to calibrate tachs. However, every analog tach has some innacuracies at some point throughout the rpm range. The most accurate are the digital ones. Set the pointer on the back of the tach to 6.

Well Tach did not work,is there a different tach for out boards than inboard?, installed new plugs, champions, and was able to achieve approximately 4-6 MPH more, then a small storm blew in on the lake with 2-4 foot waves ,scary!

Re: Tach install on 115 HP evinrude?

I have the same problem. I have a 1968 Crestliner Del Rio with a 115 Evinrude and an Airguide Tach. At idle the Tach reads about 150 rpm and it never reads above about 1400 rpm. I've tried several different hook ups, since the manual and placards are a bit contradictory. Any thoughts?

Re: Tach install on 115 HP evinrude?

Somewhere in my searches yesterday, I found some links to some old Airguide documents/instructions. Sorry, I wish I could remember where I found them and/or who pointed me that direction, so I could give them credit. But, I don't. Anyway, turned out the jumpers on the back of the guage were incorrect and looked like they'd been that way a long, long time. Works like a champ now! FYI, or my particular situation (1970 Evinrude 115) the Tach lead is in the throttle box (gray wire) and the jumper on the guage is between #1 and #2.

Re: Tach install on 115 HP evinrude?

FYI, I fried a Teleflex tach for my '98 115SPL and went through their trouble shooting guide to determine it was toast.

Start at the tach and work back to the motor. You will need a digital (or analog) multimeter. Your tach will have 3 terminals 12VDC (probably purple wire), GND (black wire), SIGNAL (probably grey wire) and a light connection.

Start motor and measure voltage at battery. If 12V or less then rectifier is shot and tach will not work. If 13V or more then rectifier is good and problem is elsewhere. Shut off motor.

1) With key in RUN position and motor off, check for 12VDC at 12V terminal on the tach.
2) Using an ohmmeter, check for good GND connection on GND terminal on tach.
Correct any issues above before continuing.
Start engine.
3) Using AC mode on multimeter, check for voltage on SIGNAL terminal on tach. Vary motor RPM and check that voltage varies as well.
If you have all the above and the tach does not work....time for a new tachometer.

Hope this helps.
