Tach Guage wakes up at high RPM

I have a tach on my boat/115HP Merc L6, and it does not "wake up" until I rev the motor up - then it starts moving at a high RPM and appears to have a dead-zone for anything under 1000RPM. Is this normal, or is it broken or misconfigured?

Im still waiting on a response too... I have seen my new teleflex guage do the same. My guage is on a 1986 Evinrude V6-150, though.

Re: Tach Guage wakes up at high RPM

What's a pole setting?

On my OEM gauge that came with the boat (Quicksilver) the needle rests at around 1000 RPM even with the boat off. Two different boat mechanics say that's normal. Sounds like yours may be a little sticky at the low end but probably OK?

That being said I dont trust mine either and I had posted a question about finding a small tach to see if I could verify the original one's readings. Someone suggested www.tinytach.com
