I am looking for a bit of info on a tachometer for my 1974 johnson 70 hp. i have learned that the motor is a 12 pole system i think, which i have no idea what that means. But i think from what i have learned that means i need a 6-pole tach. If someone could fill me in on what all this means and where i could find something cheep that would work,it would help out alot. Thanks,Dave

There are 2 different settings refered to in the "tach" world, 12 POLE is the same as 6 PULSE, not to be confused. You need one or the other. The Faria app guide only goes back to 77 and it calls for 12 pole.

IMHO this is the best tach setup in the world, self powered (5 year battery), easy to mount and depending on the model includes an hour meter which is resettable...

I personally have had fairly bad luck with Faria, Autometer and Gaffrig tachometers as far as their quality and accuracy goes. I find the Tiny Tach's to be pretty darn accurate and for the price you can't beat them...

If you want a gauge at the helm, get OEM, Teleflex or Faria. You need a tachometer that has a 6P setting on the dial on the back of the gauge.

If you have a side mounted remote control from 1974, the signal wire is in the control, taped off.
