Tach eratic

e88 evinrude new tach seems to be right sometimes. I first installed a used tach that was eratic and then a new one. Sometimes at cruise goes to 7000 without changing engine rpm, sometimes goes to 0 RPM. Question: Where do I set the tach for this engine, 6P? Is the eratic indication possibly due to a malfunction in the rectifier?

YES, absolutely.

And I believe your correct on the setting for your tach.

Agree with Metric especiallly if it's not charging your battery.

don't have starting problems. Have noticed that depth finder does not work at high speed i td id. From reading another thread, think it might be overcharging. These batteries are old and probably do not have much capacity, so full charge would happen sooner rather than later. I need to check the output with batteries chargedfully.
