Hi all,

We have a pair of Mercruiser Engines (2012 ECT 5.0L MPI DTS BR 3 T-260 Sterm drives) and the Port Engine recently went into System Guardian mode and indicated a System Fault. When we looked at our SmartVessel display, it indicated System Guardian Mode, Reduce Power to prevent engine damage. "REDUCE ENGINE SPEED".

We called a tech to come out but when he plugged into the engine, there were no error codes or history of system faults found on his diagnostic software running on a Windows Laptop. And thus, they don't know what's wrong with it and we are not sure what to do next.

Is it possible to have a System Fault without the Engine recording the Fault? I find it odd that it occured. They sent two (2) techs out. The first one indicated No fault. We sent them a video of the system fault so they sent a second tech to meet us (live). And when he plugged in, no fault found.

What lead to the System Fault was our boat had 8 people on it and we were not able to get up on plane. We kept running at WOT attempting to get up on plane when finally the System Fault occured. Not sure if it overheated, etc.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

The DTS is new and if the Techs do no have updated software they may not be able to read them. I'm guessing they should have Diacom software and the latest version is 2.9

Things that cause major power reduction
Low oil pressure
Low drive lube
ECT over heat
Over speed
Water pressure low
Knock

These sound a constant alarm

Other things which may cause the issue is a voltage drop to the PCM which there would be no code. Not as familiar with the new DTS codes but with new stuff comes new problems. Since its a 2012, try calling Merc and ask if they can provide any insight to possible causes
