The Honda dealer told me not to use a synthetic gear lube in my 25HP 4 stroke Honda OB. Of course he recommended Honda's brand of SAE 90 gear oil. Any truth to this or is he just pushing Honda products?

Unless Honda drive units do not like 'slippery' they are just trying to pump up their bottom line.
The only thing I'm aware of that does not like syn gear oil is limited slip differentials. The hypoid is too slippery for the clutch packs to hold properly.
I do know that Ford recommends synthetic hypoid in my E-150 differential. The only basic difference between a diff a drive unit on an o/b is that the o/b operates around a potentially wet invironment. Synthetics are as protective of metals, that get wet, as any petroleum products.
