Simply stated:
Syntetic is a better overall oil.
Only problem, a lighter wallet once leaving the store.

no problem whatsoever with synthetic oil, been using it on my motor. And you get a lot less smoke Plus engine seems to be running smoother at same rpm.

Take two motors, run one with pet oil and the other with synthetic. Let them sit a year in a humid environment and see which one has internal rust. If internal corrosion is a concern use petroleum oil.

Re: SYNTETIC OIL

Good question Defo!
I put full synthetic (Mobil 1) into my 2002 50 HP Merc at 22 hours after a careful brake-in, then ran for another 50 hours until the end of the season. I thought my owners manual said I should use Merc oil or an equivalent quality.
My cousin who has the a 2003 Merc 50 HP 4 Stroke went to a local dealer to buy a filter and was told that if he did not use Merc 4 stroke oil, his warranty would be void.
Now I'm really worried, anyone know if this is true?
I have for the last 10+ years run my vehicles on synthetic after the first 10,000 Km and changed oil & filter every 10,000 Km with no major mechanical problems. I have always thought the extra cost was minimal compared to the cost of a new motor.
Consumers report did a test on oils using New York taxis a number of years ago. Their conclusion was that all oils available in the US & Canada tested were acceptable. They felt the synthetics performed better under extreme conditions like cold starts and hot running Turbo engines and the service intervals could be increased to 6000 miles/10000 Km.

Re: SYNTETIC OIL

the key is to use a oil formulated for marine use. Oils formulated for marine use have the proper additives to prevent corrosion. Marine engines run cool; therefore, the advantages of using a synthetic are limited. You really do not have to worry about viscosity break-down. Save money and go with the dinosour oil.

If using synthetic oil causes less smoking, will you get less plug oiling when trolling ?

Philby,
I would be a little worried if my 4 stroke was smoking and oiling the plugs at any speed.
You must be talking about a 2 stroke motor and there has been many discussions on that subject.
Just do a search on Synthetic 2 stroke oil.
