SX shifting

My 1995 SX drive doesnt want go into reverse sometimes. When you put in reverse it takes about 5 seconds for it to go into reverse. It always goes into forward gear right away. It is nothing to do with the cables, they are good. Something going on in the drive. It has new Mobile synthetic oil in it. Any help?

May just be out of adjustment. Remove the back plastic cover off the drive, remove the prop, start on muffs, put in reverse and see if you can move the shift mechanism by hand any further and see if it goes into gear.

Goes into gear every time out of the water.

I didn't ask if it worked out of the water. Did you check the lever by hand like I suggested?

If the adjustments Ok, then you probably need a new shift cone.
