SX-M shift plate mount bolts stripped

All,
So, removed my SX-M outdrive for a way overdue lube change and gimbal bearing check... drained and pressure checked and put new lube in, then, noticed one of the 4 bolts that hold the shift lever "plate" or whatever it is called (next to the plug for the oil level), was loose, the head of the bolt wasn't against the plate. go to snug it up, and it is stripped... check the others, the opposite corner is also stripped. Take the other two out, one has messed up threads, so almost stripped. The rebuilder just used gasket sealer and glued and snugged up the bolts, lasted for 4 years, but was starting to come loose - still held pressure though. Now, what to do... I am planning on enlarging the holes for 1/4-20 helicoils - they are already stripped to .250, drill for helicoil is .260. the screws that came out were 1/4-20 but were only 5/8 long (plate is .4 thick, so that was less than 1d engagement - not good for aluminum!). obviously, I don't want to go deeper than the holes already are.. Tap for 1D helicoil (will have to use a bottom tap as the hole is only .4 deep, install helicoil, reinstall shifter plate with proper length fasteners. Anyone have a better idea or had a similar problem or had to do a similar fix?
Thanks

My comment was can use either. Personally I like the thread inserts more but then do cost more
Got the HCs installed yesterday and put it all back together, ran it today, no issues, works like it should. The nice thing about helicoils is that the hole size is only a 1/16 more than the original, so in areas where there isn't much meat left, they are great. The tangles versions are supper easy to use, but the tools are very expensive...
