it's a 2005 5.0gl-e , sx-m 1.60 if I can recall correctly, but I read the stickies on replacing the ujoints and all was well till I got to the short shaft(yoke) and realized I must have pressed one of the ears in slightly, evidenced by the snap ring actually pushing the lip out and popping out. I know, stupid. In a frenzy about what to do I spread the ears out slighty and assembled it back together but since I blew the snap ring lip out I tack welded it back. I have zero faith this will hold so I have found new assembly on ebay part numbers show 3860842 and 3852384, are these correct, mine has outside rings as well as this. Call me rookie if you wish, I wont get butt-hurt.

Yes sir. If doing it yourself, I would recommend using a torque wrench to evaluate the torque that is on the torx before taking it off. This will give you a ball park estimate of were you will need to reset it to. The rolling torque needs to be set to I believe 9-14 ft lbs. Please check though. Also, the bearings and remaining portions will need to be pressed out to get to the crush sleeve. I decided to take this to the shop since I dont have a press and large enough drifts. I was only charged for a half an hour labor... Oh, and if you overtighten the crush sleeve you then have to start over with a new crush sleeve, so go little by little.

ok, I got a press and brass drifts so I should be good, guess ill have to pony up for inch pound screwdriver, man those bad boys are pricey for what they are. looking at manuals provided by don s. is it necessary to remove the shift cover or can I get away with just the housing around short shaft? the less I have to remove the better for my sanity at this point

Your going to need both inch-pound and a big foot pound wrench. This torx is tight, I mean really tight. And don't cheap out on a torque wrench or a no name torx head on the wrench you need this baby to be real snug.

Go here and get the manual for your drive.

Boatinfo - The library, containing manuals, brochures and other technical documents from the last hundred years!

It will walk you through step by step and provide all the proper torque specs, etc. I do not believe you should have to remove your shift cover.
