Hello everyone,

What we have is an 08 Glastron 205 with a 5.0GL-J/SX-A (manufacture date of '07). I have heard through several people that the trim cylinders are repairable/rebuildable, but that is not what I am hearing from Volvo Penta. The Port side trim cylinder is leaking at the seal where the shaft comes out of the cylinder (the wiper or scraper seal).

Can anyone verify whether or not these can be fixed and if so what measurements and where were you able to find the parts???

Hi there,

I have the very same leak on my 2010 Glastron with the SX-A drive. Please let me know if you found a fix short of replacing the ram. any info is appreciated.

Well Bond-O considering Frank's question was the first and only response I've seen, I would be more than happy to reply to his question. (I did have it set for notifications, just in case any kind souls would have let me know of any possible repairs).

Frankdtank, what we learned is that the trim cylinder is not re-buildable. Granted that is not to say that if you found a good shop that they would not be able to rig something together. We have had very good luck with Volvo Penta's customer service, to the extent that they warrantied the part and we paid a shop to install it (about $60 IIRC). Even though my husband is a mechanic they would not let him install it. It had to be done at a Volvo certified shop.

What I would recommend is that you call or email (the route we went) Volvo directly and very nicely plead your case. Make sure you write down phone numbers and who you talked to or save the emails. Good luck and happy boating this year!!!

If it takes starting a new tread , I'll do that.
Thanks for the reply Glastron, I will try Volvo , however being the 3rd owner of the boat my chances of a warranty are rather slim.

Re: SX-A Trim Cylinders

Frank, we are not the original owners of our boat either and Volvo had no issues with that, they treated us very fairly. Fair enough to the point that when we ever upgrade our boat we'll be looking for one with a Volvo in it.

Tail Gunner, We were assured that the SX-A trim cylinders were not rebuildable by Volvo themselves. Something having to do with the liability when not rebuilt correctly and it being a lot less when they just replaced the cylinder. From a business owner perspective, I can understand that, but I can also detest it coming from a consumer POV.
