Hi Guys,

Anyone have any tips on removing a rusted swivel pin? I'm thinking of just cutting the mounting bolts heads on top and in bolting the bottom. Also l looks like the soft shat needs to be unclipped. I would use e a cherry picker to hold the motor and replace...or is it easier to remove the power head and go from there?

See the image below for my rusty mercury swivel pin, i purchased a complete assembly to replace this with.

Thanks in advance for any indication / help.

Looks like a mid 90s motor, but a little more info would be nice. I pulled the swivel pin on an inline six Merc. Had to remove the gearcase and powerhead. Then pull the shift shaft out and remove the snap ring on the bottom. We removed the exhaust extension as well, to free up the upper motor mounts. The lower motor mounts slipped free when the covers were off. I would think your motor is similar.

You will likely need new motor mount bolts. On the IL6 they were 7/16" x 6" and fine thread. They were not easy to find, but I found them in a store called "Bolt Bin"for $1, rather than the $12ea that Merc wanted. Check to see if you need new motor mounts as well.

Hey thank you for the reply. Yes its a 1998 mercury offshore 150 with 25 inch shaft. Last year i tried to remove the power head, but was unable to seperate it. I removed all 8 bolts like the manual said but with some good force it didnt break free. I did not remove the lower unit maybe this was the reason? Anything else i missed?

My lower nuts/bolts are good actually i replaced those and the brakets last year. Do you think removing the power head is the only way? The shift shaft pin looks like a pain to clip back on aswell.

Thanks again.

On the IL6, there was no way to get to the upper motor mounts was to pull the powerhead. Also the only way to get the shift rod out was to pull the powerhead.

I pulled the powerhead on my '93 Merc V6 motor, to replace the cowling support. It was not too hard, after I got the nuts off the corroded powerhead mounting bolts. My V6 Merc had 10 nuts, so you may have missed two.

With the shift rod running through the swivel, you must pull the powerhead. If you can't pull the powerhead, this motor may be done for... Judging by the crustiness of the lower mounts, this won't be a fun project...

8 nuts by manual?... 10 nuts... ya probably missed tha two (very short) front ones.. PH has ta come off... pretty sad lookin'.. like said, gonna be a real up hill battle with both tha power head and mid..... seen several not as bad as yours that had ta be cut off, exhaust adapter, PH studs replaced... gl.
