If I switch over to Dual Controls, will this make 1 control my shift control and the other my throttle exclusively? Would I only move the throttle forward to give it gas in both FORWARD and REVERSE?

Why would you want to go to dual handle controls? Single handles have a lockout that positively puts the engine in gear before the throttle advances. Much simpler and easier to use.

However, if you want twin handles to make the restored hull period correct, the shorter handle is the shift and the longer is throttle.

Re: Switching from Single Lever Controls over to Double Lever Controls

Here's why:

I purchased my motor to go onto the boat I'm restoring but it didn't come with the controls.

I found a set of controls for free that is single level MerControl box but the warm-up lever is broken. However, both cables are in excellent shape and are the perfect length so I saved myself about $50 in cables. I wired my own Electrical harness using a 8wire Marine 12AWG harness connected to a NEW engine plug and a NEW Mercury Push to Choke ignition. My issue is with this box......

I can't seem to find an affordable replacement box anywhere! I refuse to spend $150-$300 on another box and I can't find a suitable replacement on ebay.....

I have, however, found a universal UFLEX box for $100 that is dual lever which is why I wanted some input.

yes that's how they work...... I hate em... really sux when you are in reverse while docking and you reach up to shove it into forward only to realize that you just hit full throttle.... OOPS

Well, it's kinda like the diff in an auto tranny or stick...different but you get used to it. On a two-handle control, one is shift and the other throttle...forward for speed, rearward for idle.
