I'm curious as to why you only have one box upgraded to the CDI unit? I'm not an expert on your specific motor since mine is a '69 model with only one switchbox, but I would venture to guess that if each switchbox drives a completely independent ignition system (no interface between the boxes) that you could mix and match all you want. As far as the ignition systems are concerned, they each think they are firing a 3 cylinder motor. The two motors just happen to be spinning the same crankshaft.

FWIW, I just put a CDI box on my '69 motor and it works GREAT!

Ron

They are made to merc specs, so they should perform the same. Who do you think makes the powerpacks for merc? Same guys that make the aftermarkets. Only diff is Merc pak is $205, and aftermarket is $105-$140. I bought merc pak for mine, I wanted to go fishing NOW. 1980 90hp inline 6

same guys make mercs and aftermarket switchboxes?? curious to know your source for this info, mbb....boxes can be mixed, with little ill effect, have seen it done many times. I would make an arguement about calling a CDI an 'upgrade'...mercs replacement boxes for these motors are dependable....

Re: Switched switchboxes

It appears I stated something the wrong way. I have no knowledge that aftermarket mfgs also manufacture mercury parts. However, what I meant is that it is very, very common for this type arrangement to occur in all areas of retail consumer manufacturing. It is a win-win situation for all involved. It results in lowest cost for the OEM part and the aftermarket part. The aftermarket parts may cut corners in some ways, or they may be exactly the same, in a few cases they are actually superior. I wouldnt be surprised if the same production facility produced both, in fact I would expect it. My apology for stating something as factual that is not.
