Is there a method of testing the switchbox on a Merc 402 40hp abt 1980 mod, without removing it and taking it to the dealer to use his Quicksilver Thunderbolt Ignition Analyzer ? I strongly suspect this to be faulty as the stator and the trigger coil test OK and I have no spark but I am unsure about testing the switchbox.

Re: Switchbox testing.

To test a switchbox you need a DVA meter. What your doing with it is measuring the peak voltage reached on a fluctuating AC voltage signal. There are DVA adapters that you can buy and plug a regular multimeter into, but their almost as much as a new meter.(basically they are a capacitor across the meter leads which stores the voltage) I bought mine from mercury dealer for about $70. If you have a dealer who says he cant sell you merc tools or a factory manual, tell him F$%K you, and find a new dealer.

You do not test switch boxes off the motor...you check all else in system and declare switch box bad by default....if you have power and control going into the box [stator an trigger] and nothing comin out, guess what? time for a box......
