I have a 1977 Merc. IL 6. and it wasn't getting any spark. I followed Clams instructions (thanks to jheron for the phone help also!) and got some very wierd results.
I disconnected the mercury switch...no spark.
I pulled all the plugs and grounded #1 plug to a body bolt. I put the key forward, had fly wheel on TDC and got 12+ on both the RED and WHITE off the switchbox. I then went to the dist. side. I jumped WHITE & BROWN and grounded BLACK and got spark from the end of my #1 plug (again..grounded to body bolt). Now....If I turned the flywheel by hand at this point, I can hear the sparking order and still see a spark at #1 plug. So...I take the jumpers off and I put the BLACK wire back on and get NO SPARK?? So...I put flywheel at TDC, I take the BLACK off, jump the WHITE and BROWN and TADA!!...I have spark? I have cleaned up all the crudy looking wires, made sure all contacts were good and now I'm not sure what to do????
Any suggestions as to what I should do from here??

Thanks Tim,
Actually I don't take them off at all. I just jump the 2 posts together. The only one to come off is the BLACK.

Go to. www.outboardrepair.com Then click on Mercury then troubleshooting then click on print out this booklet.
You may find some help!
I just had a spark problem with one of my boats it was a 1975 illine 6. It was my trigger. My guess is that you could have a bad switchbox.
"Mine was a intermitant trigger. It was a puzzle to find the problem." Good Luck, Tim

P.S. Maybe Clams or Laddie will pop in and have you a answer?

Your test tells you that when get fire with the black wire disconnected and arc arcing it to ground that you have a bad trigger
