I have a 1977 Merc. IL 6. and it wasn't getting any spark. I followed Clams instructions (thanks to jheron for the phone help also!) and got some very wierd results.
I disconnected the mercury switch...no spark.
I pulled all the plugs and grounded #1 plug to a body bolt. I put the key forward, had fly wheel on TDC and got 12+ on both the RED and WHITE off the switchbox. I then went to the dist. side. I jumped WHITE & BROWN and grounded BLACK and got spark from the end of my #1 plug (again..grounded to body bolt). Now....If I turned the flywheel by hand at this point, I can hear the sparking order and still see a spark at #1 plug. So...I take the jumpers off and I put the BLACK wire back on and get NO SPARK?? So...I put flywheel at TDC, I take the BLACK off, jump the WHITE and BROWN and TADA!!...I have spark? I have cleaned up all the crudy looking wires, made sure all contacts were good and now I'm not sure what to do????
Any suggestions as to what I should do from here??
