Switchbox Repair

I have a no-spark situation with my late 1970's Merc 20hp outboard. I checked the coils, the stator coils and the trigger and they all check out okay. I disconnected the kill switch to ensure that it wasn't shorting out somewhere, but the motor still had no spark.

So, I am thinkng the switchbox must be the problem. Is there anyway that I can take the switchbox apart to repair it? It has a rubbery type cover over the one side of the box. I tried to remove it, but it appears to be sealed to the cast metal. Is there anyway to get into the box to check all the electrical connections? Is there anyway to test the box, short of the mercury dealer?

The box number is: 332-4911A2

I found one on eBay that is identical for mine (although much worse condition). Any help is greatly appreciated.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2421500796&category=31284

Thanks for the link.

Anyone else with any advice? Is repair possible or I am wasting my time trying to fix this switch box?

Re: Switchbox Repair

I think I am just going to replace the switchbox. The Mercury dealer quoted me $270 CDN for a new one. If he has a used one, I am looking at about $100 CDN.

The above link for Seiler Marine has a switch box listed for $135 USD which is about $180 CDN. So even after I factor in the shipping it will be cheaper to get it from these guys. However these are aftermarket parts, not OEM. How do they compare to OEM? Should I pay extra to get the Mercury Marine parts?

What about the used switch box? Is it worth the risk to save the money? I plan on keeping this motor for many years to come. And as far as I can tell it's in pretty good shape for its age (but I am no expert).

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
