I currently have a 97 Johnson 41lb thrust trolling motor on my boat and its 24 volt. I can get a nice minnkota power drive 55lb thrust for $100 but its 12v. Is it still gonna be a better motor even though its a 12v?

I can put the batteries in parallel, and I don't have an on board charger so I charge the batteries individually. But I'm asking is it smart to get the 55# 12v over my 41# 24v?

Welcome to iboats!:welcome:

Your current motor is 16 years old and that's a good price on the Minn Kota. I would buy it and compare performance. If nothing else, you will have spare.

One thing is for certain -- you will have 14# more thrust at fastest speed. Any setting less than that becomes moot huh? The real question is will the 55# deliver the performance you need/desire using the two 12 volt batteries in parallel vs the old motor with two batteries in series. There are no comparison charts for that so the only way to know is to spend $100.
