Swimbaits for Stripers.

I usually pick up a dozen of herring live bait before heading out to do some striper fishing. However, it is becoming terribly expensive ($8.95/ Dozen) and you usually have to purchase twice as much as you need because half of them usually die before making it to the hook.

Anyhow, I was wondering how the new plastic/rubber swimbaits work for stripers. Our local tackle shop has some that look just like herring bait. Also, is there a herring liquid attractant that can be used with it so it gets as close to the real McCoy as possible?

I humbly admit, I have little experience with swimbaits but think it's about time I give em a try. Helpful advice appreciated.

Kevin

I've heard guys doing well with storm wild eye
swim shads for stripers, though I haven't tried
them myself.
ever considered dipping for herring yourself?

Usually when i am striper fishn, i normally will bring at least 25 one dollar bills..If that doesn't atract a hit I will switch to a ten dollar bill..Oh my bad we are talkn about another type of fishn.. :D

I would say if herring is on the diet then any lure with that color sequence would more than likely work..Flash always attracts when searching for that special fin..

I've used storm wildeye's with good success for freshwater stripers & hybrids. The forage here is threadfin shad & the 4" chartreuse/silver seems to be a good match.

jtexas how big do your stripers get? And are you fishing fresh or salt?

I was out testing the boat and I swear there were more fish surfaceing than I can believe. To bad I didn't have a rod with me or a licence.

This is about as good as I've done, realgun, a skinny 25" 5 pounder:

I'm a long ways from the coast. We have a few lakes with stripers upwards of 30lbs, and several with growing populations of hybrids up to 15. Lake Texoma has one of the few self-sustaining populations of freshwater stripers.

What's that about being in a boat with no rods? I don't get it... ;)

Well the boats not even all done yet. :D
The record here is a 54 lb striper. All at Elephant Butte lake. I wanna try for 1 soon and I will as soon as the boats done. The best time I have heard has pasted but it comes every year. Oct-May.

We get White bass almost that big (as your picture) and there are people who catch stipers and keep them cause they cannot tell then from the whites.

I would love for my 9 year old daughter to get ahold of one of those freight trains!
