My 07 Seaswirl 210 BR has the extended platform and swim ladder from Seaswirl on it. The hinged "lid" that covers the stowed ladder is secured down with a fabric strap that snaps down. At some point last fall, that strap frayed and broke off. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement for it? Seaswirl hasn't made this boat for over 5 years now.

Can you just make a strap? Most of the ones I've seen are just made of flat nylon webbing with a snap on the end. It's about $2 worth of materials.

+1

Most any Fabric/Craft Store will have the Strap/Webbing and the Snaps.
Or put some Velcro strips under the hatch to keep it from Flapping.

how about scavenging a strap with a snap clip already sewn on from an old ski vest or something?

and if you need to do some sewing on the strap, take it to a shoe repair shop

Thanks guys. I have some velco I can try first, and a few places I know that carry that nylon webbing. How are snaps installed in fabric? I've done grommets before...kind of the same method?

Don't use Velcro because it is more of a cotton base fabric. Get some Nylon strapping

Either way, the velcro is a pain to use. I used the velcro as a temporary ladder strap for a few months a while back. I had an old life vest that had been chewed up which I salvaged some nylon webbing from.

If you go the Velco route, use a razor blade and carefully slice off the first couple rows of hooks all the way around (before sticking it to the boat). Just do it to the hook piece, not the loop piece. This will keep the Velcro from trying to pull up the edges, keeps it stuck down better.

JoAnn Fabric - 1" nylon sold by the foot - 99 cents
Seven Eleven store - book of matches - 10 cents
(to seal the ends so you don't have to sew them)
Ebay - snap fastener installation kit - 5.99
(still have 5 more snaps left for the next project)

Problem solved.

I've worked with some nylon before (skydiving parachute fabric/lines are nylon) and I've used a lighter to clean up frayed lines. Same idea with the matches? This sounds like the way I'll go, I prefer the strap over velcro. Thanks everyone.

Yeah, the match/lighter was to fuse the cut-ends to keep it from fraying/unraveling.
