Swapping Upper Unit Housings

A few months ago, I broke my upper unit. Alpha one gen 1 5.0. I just picked up an alpha one gen 1 UU housing from a 170.

My gears and everything are still fine, and I have all the shims still in the correct orientation for the yoke and everything.

What do I need to do to take the old internals from my broken housing and put them in the new housing? I'm guessing I can't just dump it all in with the same shims and everything.

You need to buy/rent the shimming tools and set the gear clearances and bearing preloads up as per the Mercury service manual.

Just to be clear...this is the correct manual?

Also, I am not taking apart the drive and driven shafts. Wouldn't the bearing preload on the drive already be set?

That's the correct manual. The upper driveshaft has shim heights and preloads to be set, and the drive gear bearing pack also needs to be shimmed to the correct depth. The shims adjust the bearings and gears to the housing, so changing the housing means you MUST set the shims. Without setting up the shims correctly, the drive life is measured in minutes, not years.

Read through the manual (at least 3 times) before you start the job. ANY questions or doubts, ask here. Easier to answer a silly question than reverse a stupid f...up.
