Im just curious weather i could take an upper gear case off a lower unit that has the type of drive shaft WITH the spring loaded pin on top and put on a lower that does not have the spring loaded pin WITHOUT having bearing shimming problems.

In short, does that pin change shimming or preload?

Re: Swapping gear case to different lower unit question

All major assemblies on MC-1, R, MR and Alpha One are interchangeable without any modifications needed...

The pin is used in MC-1 and R drives, and (as Bondo correctly said) keeps the bearing under the water pump in the gear housing in contact with its outer race. The reason for the pin is that the pinion and forward/reverse try to push apart when spinning and the top drive-shaft bearing is set up to require the shaft to be pushed down to keep that contact. So they put that spring-loaded pin in. When they made the MR and Alpha One (and the Alpha One Gen II) they took advantage of the gears pushing apart, flipped the bearing over and removed the pin.... The only other thing that had to change was that they need a threaded locking ring to stop the bearing driving its way up.... And that's done below the water pump, so unless you remove the water pump base, you'll never see it.....

HTH,

Chris...........
