Swapping engine to a different manufacturer?

I'm doing some planning in case I am forced to throw in the towel on my current engine. What I currently have is an '88 Suzuki DT75, which I have had quite a time with as far as getting it to work properly. I won't go into details on this post, but if you're really curious about what I went through, go here:

I am still going to attempt to find out what went wrong, but I am posting this new post in case I decide (or am forced) to give up on this engine and replace it.

Also, let me state that this isn't a rant against Suzuki; plenty of people have had great luck with them and I am certainly not holding Suzuki responsible for a 20-year-old poorly maintained engine.

But, back to the point. What is involved in swapping out an outboard to a different manufacturer? I ask because I don't come across a lot of similar-horsepower Suzuki outboards in my price range - usually they are Mercs, Evinrudes, etc. The more common makes.

As far as physically mounting the engine to the boat, well I am sure I can figure that out without too much trouble.

My concerns are; what about the controls? My boat, as far as I know, was originally built with the Suzuki DT75 so I am assuming it has a Suzuki control box. However, no manufacturer is shown on the box, so I don't know exactly what it is. It does work fine for the Suzuki engine - but are these control boxes (and the lever) adaptable to different engines? I have two brand new Teleflex universal control cables between the control box and the engine, but they have Suzuki ends threaded on them.

Or should I try and find an engine that comes with the controls?

The boat has a new Teleflex steering system with a new cable; (was fun to put in ) I assume the Teleflex steering cables can work with most outboards. Is this correct?

I also assume I will have to replace the gauges; which is fine since the ones I have don't seem to work anyway.

Anyway, if anyone has any advice or knows of any potential major hang-ups I'll run into, I'm all ears. For reference, the boat is a 1988 Cobia 177 center console and the engine I may be replacing is an '88 Suzuki DT75. Thanks!

Sounds like some relatively minor fuel delivery problem, and once solved, you should be good to go. No need to scrap the entire motor, especially since you've had the carbs and fuel sytem cleaned up. Sorry for your problems but don't give up on that motor...it can be fixed! Good Luck!

Re: Swapping engine to a different manufacturer?

Thanks.....I'm still bit concerned about having it run so poorly after being revved to full throttle for 5 seconds. I am having the broken bolts drilled out soon (I hope) by a machinist I know. That will allow me to see if anything went wrong in the cylinders or the head gasket blew....or, if its none of those...I dunno.

I am mainly just exploring the possibility that something did go wrong to the point where it would be better to swap engines.

Wide open throttle for 5 seconds can't be good for motor. Well, good luck!
