Two part question. First I have an 83 350 and i have found a 89 crudsader 350. Would these two be inter changable? Would the alpha drive hook up to is the same and would all the accesories fit the same?
2 it will mount in my boat on the same two bolt mount right?

Those two engines are of different vintages, short version they have a different flywheel, starter and coupler. If you get these parts with the "new" engine, then yes the rest is 100% interchangable.

What are the differences that couldn't be overcome using components off of the old engine.

No,..........

If you Strip them both down to the Long Block configuration,+ then install All the Mercruiser parts onto the Crusader,......
Then you'll just have to deal with the Differences at the Flywheel........

Aha! That's because the Crusader is an inboard engine, and the Mercruiser is I/O setup. Basically the same motor, but like bondo, & shabah said the newer motor has a different (newer style) crankshaft, hence a different flywheel, & coupler bolt pattern., and of course you'll need your old Merc style exhaust manifolds, & risers.

I understand the differences between pre and post 1986 engines. What coupler would be needed to use a post 86 in a pre 86 application. Is it the same for Merc and Volvo? If not what are the differences?

Ayuh,....... It depends entirely on What you're starting with...........

Old Mercs used a Crankshaft mounted Coupler,....
Later 1s used a Flywheel mounted Coupler......

If it's the Crankshaft mounted Coupler,....
They make 1 with the 3" bolt pattern for the newer crankshafts......

If it's the Flywheel mounted Coupler,...... You just need the Right Flywheel......

And,........ I have No Clue what Volvo uses,.... So,... I can't say......

well your dealing with the 12" VS 14" flywheel to the best of my understanding ?

As well as the problems that go with the correct starter

I have seen this come up many times and never seen and easy fix( like use flywheel X and it will work )

And just be sure Crusader spins the correct way as it could be CC or C
