I recently bought a 91 Glastron with a Mercruiser 5.0 with a MR/Gen 1 Alpha, bad news is that it has a cracked block. In my other posts you guys may have read that I wanted to replace the motor with a long block or a used motor. Somebody suggestest that I find a used omc motor and put it in.
So today I posted an ad on craigslist in milwaukee and chicago looking for a used omc or merc 5.0 or a 5.7. I had somebody from a small boat repair place email me back saying they had a good running 1989 OMC 5.7 still in a boat/ They said I could hear it run and if I like what I see they would pull it and I can have it for 1400 with manifolds or 1200 without manifolds. He also said they had 1983 Volvo 5.0 that needs a distributor that I can have for 600 with manifolds and 400 without. would the volvo work? what needs to be swapped over? I know I need to reuse my manifolds and I'm guessing ill need my bellhousing too.

Thanks to everyone who has already helped me out

No question the 5.7ltr. For 1200 I'd need a warrenty of some sort. Don't need the manifolds.

I'd want to see that engine get up to temp at least. Its a big project to do with a bad motor. Do your own compression check at the shop. Consistancy between 145 and 160.

Good luck.

Ayuh,......

Are you Mechanic enough to know the exact meanings of the terms,...
Short block motor, Long block motor,+ a Dressed motor,..??..??

If your just replacing the block,+ heads,... You need a Long block motor....

Reman'ed or even New can be had for the money you're going to spend on a Dressed motor...
And those motors are Both Dressed, All Wrong....

Everything beyond the Long block configuration is Scrap,...
It Won't/ Don't fit with a Mercruiser....

If you really want to Cheap out,...
Go buy a Chevy pickup truck for $500. and yank the 350 out of it, strip it to the Long block configuration,+ install your Merc parts....
Just make sure it's the Right Vintage....

I know what a long block is, I said I was either going to go with a reman long block and transfer my stuff from the cracked block over or buy a complete used motor that I could just drop in. If I found a complete used omc cheap I was going to transfer over my manifolds, bellhousing, etc
So idealy I would like to find a complete used merc 5.7 with low hours so I could just pull the old motor and put that one in.

buy a complete used motor that I could just drop in.

Then you need a complete MERCRISER engine, not OMC or Volvo. The accessories are all different. Like manifolds, linkage, ignition systems, bellhousing, couplers, etc. Putting an OMC or Volvo complete engine in in place of a Mercruisere would be like putting a Ford engine in a Chevy. Nothing would fit.

If what you have is still good but the block, call michigan motors, my friend bought the long block with new heads for 2000. That was 2 years ago. Delivered to his house.

Than dress it with your old stuff if still good, manifolds, starter, risers, fuel pump, carb.

They will ask for the casting numbers.

Than you will be in business with a good running motor.

And if you take care of it 20+ years no problem.

Over here where i live you can get a truck motor 350-5.7, 250.00. No problem.

Your lucky you can use a truck motor my options were limited to a marine motor. As stated be careful of the vintage. Don't forget to change out the freeze plugs to brass.

Whats it gonna cost for the master gasket set? 100 bucks? Maybe the heads need work?

Up to you want to take a chance on a truck motor. The guy over here knows me would take it back if junk, but your guys over there?

Maybe you can talk to them, tell them what your doing, might take it back if the block is cracked, or can't be rebuilt.

Ayuh,....

So why pay $1200. for a Used motor, that you'll have to throw away 1/2 of it's Parts,...
When you can buy a Brand New GM Long Block for about the Same money,..??

This whole thread is making Less,+ Less Sense.....
