Swap out a dreaded 470

What would it take and what engine could i use to replace a merc 470? it has a R Alpha out drive. 1979 sportcraft 21'

I dont know that anything else will fit without custom work for the motor mounts. A 3.0 4 cylinder might work. A 4.3 V6 would be nice but you will probably need some engine mount stringers fabbed and the gear ratio in your drive will be a little low probably.<br />The experts will chime in any time with some more info.<br />I have a 1985 3.7 liter mercruiser and have been lucky so far,3rd season. It's too bad you got a bad one.<br />good luck

More than likely because of the front mounting configuration you'll need to do some fiberglass work.

i have replaced a few 3.7l engines and so far the 3.0l drops in with no modifications needed. unfortunately the horsepower is a little less and you will have to check your drive to be sure your gear ratio will work with the new 3.0l
