Thanks to all who gave me advice about my recently cracked block on my 5.7L Merc (210hp). As I expected, the repair shop is not stepping up to take any responsibility, so I'm going to have to get the work done elsewhere and sue. What a waste of time and energy.....
So, the estimate I got to repair the motor is about $7000 ($3000 for the block, and the rest in parts and labor). I recently came across a posting for a 2006 Mercr 350hp 5.7L BRAVO carborated engine that is around $5500. I was thinking that I could swap out the 210hp entirely rather than repair the block, but I was told that putting in a Bravo may require changing the Alpha outdrive on my setup (torque and controls/instruments compatability issues) and may involve lots of other labor and parts costs that could push the total cost up towards $10,000 (including the $5500 motor). Does anyone know whether that sounds right? I was hoping that I could simply have them pull out the existing motor (4 hours?) and then drop in the new motor (4 hours?) and hook up any additional small items (4hours?) for about 10-15 hours total.
As usual, I searched other posts for this information, but couldn't find anything. If anyone can give me any advice on this or knows whether this has been answered elsewhere, please let me know. Thanks again iBoat members!
