Has anyone swapped a 5.0 (ford HO) omc cobra to a 454 volvo dp. I have the opportunity to do this in a 1998 scr 2700 maxum. THe original motor runs great, but i'v taken it out 3 times and towed home twice because of outdrive failing ie oil shoots into water engine screams no propulsion Ive had outdrive rebuilt twice both times propeller shaft being pushed into lower unit.

This is a friends of mine boat that I will be doing we can get everything motor transom shield ypipe outdrive as one unit shipped to us so anything else you think we might need before tearing it out and waiting would be appreciated

Re: swap engnes

Be ready to do a little transom modification, engine bed modification and motor mounts.

also if this boat is ever going to be used in salt now is the time to install fresh water cooling system (heat exchanger) while engine is new.

Re: swap engnes

Just to make sure what you are doing.
You are taking out the 5.0 OMC Cobra engine and outdrive out of a 27' Maxum. Then putting in the 7.4 & DP drive you are buying,,,,,,,, Right??? If so, it's already the exact same as the Volvo. You only need to remove the engine, and outdrive. Leave the transom shield and trim system. It doesn't change. Keep the new stuff though, you won't like the replacement prices if something breaks.
About the only thing I see you needing is changing the front engine mounts a little. Other than that, it's a boilt in.

Thought the transom hole was the same.
Figured on motor mounts being diff as the bbc is bigger but does anyone know the difference in length?
Has anyone bolted a steel plate to each of the stringers to help with the weight? or will that mess up with the torque twisting?

Thanks Don, That's what I was hoping to hear. Now i just hope my forklift will lift it up high enough without taking it outside. Yes that is what we will do take out the 5.0 which was put in place of a 5.7 mercruiser by the original owner.

Best to just glass in the pads to fit. Not knowing how far or or which directions the steel plates would have to be makes guessing a "Not-So-Good" idea. Put the engine in and bolt down the rear mounts with an engine hoist on the front of the engine to hold it. Use the alignment bar and adjust the engine till the bar goes in the coupler. Now measure where the mounts need to be.
